How Does A Hydraulic Crimper Work

A hydraulic crimper works by using pressurised liquid to drive a piston down into a cylinder where it compresses a die against a cable, wire or hose being worked on. As this happens, the die forms a permanent bend at its point of contact. When the pressure is released, the die springs back up out of the way leaving behind a permanently bent section of the wire, hose end coupling or cable crimp.

The hydraulically operated die opens up and closes by pushing on one side of the cylinder against a stationary face. As it pushes down, the hydraulic pressure forces the die into contact with another surface. When the desired amount of compression or a certain size has been reached, the hydraulic system releases its pressure forcing the die back out. In this way, the die can be repeatedly opened and closed multiple times until enough material has been compressed to form a permanent seal between the surfaces. In the case of hydraulic hose crimping it is only recommended to crimp once and to a set size determined by the manufacture of the hose and hose end. It is also always strongly advised among leading hose and fitting manufacturers not to mix and match different brands of hydraulic hose and couplings as hose manufacturing dimensions and fitting tolerances vary between manufacturers. Ignoring this could result in the hose failing (hydraulic hose failure) under pressure and could cause significant equipment damage, personal injury or death.

Do you know how to use a hydraulic hose crimping machine

If you are assembling your own hydraulic hoses in your workshop or for onsite repairs then you may be in need of a hydraulic hose crimping machine that allows you to crimp your own fittings yourself. Not only does this enable you to crimp hoses yourself but it can save time, because you won't have to travel to the nearest place to have this done by someone else.
Hydraulic hoses are used on all sorts of systems and are made to specific lengths depending on where they are mounted on hydraulic components. By having your own hydraulic hose crimping machine, you no longer have to mount all the components, then measure up the hose lengths and go off to get the hoses crimped only to have to completely re-mount the components again afterwards.
Before you crimp any hydraulic hose, you should ensure that you have the correct equipment available.

Recommended safety equipment includes:
Goggles,
Ear protectors,
Strong, protective gloves.

Crimping hydraulic hoses doesn't need to be difficult. Simply follow the steps below:
Measure the length of hose your hydraulic system requires and cut to the right length. Before cutting, for critical hose lengths ensure to account for the cut off factor when determining the final length. If the edge of the hose is rough then this should be filed smooth.
Determine the insertion depth for the hydraulic hose within the appropriate fitting to ensure that once the assembly of the hydraulic system is complete it won't fail.
Tip: Mark the insertion depth on the hydraulic hose with chalk to ensure accuracy.
Choose the correct crimp diameter for each hose, before selecting the correct crimp die set.
Push the hydraulic hose into the crimping machine and through the crimp die until the hose's fitting appears above the crimp die. The top of the hose should not be visible above the crimp die.
Place the compression ring or collar above the crimp die.
Ensure that you have put on your safety gear.
Turn on the hydraulic hose crimping machine.
The crimping machine then pushes the collar that compresses the die and the machine will stop once the collar is at the bottom of the crimp die.
If you have marked the insertion depth with chalk checking whether the hydraulic hose crimping was successful should be simply. A chalk mark that is no longer at the base of the fitting then this is not a secure crimp and a result of the hose or fitting moving during the crimping process. A chalk mark that has not moved is the sign of a good, secure crimp to a hydraulic hose.

FAQ

Q: What are the safety rules in using hydraulic crimper?

A: Always wear protective gear, follow the manufacturer's instructions, inspect the crimper before each use, use the correct dies and hoses, keep your hands and body parts clear of the machine, and never modify or alter the machine.

Q: What happens if you over crimp a hydraulic hose?

A: Before the assembly is crimped, be sure the fitting is pushed on the hydraulic hose all the way to prevent the end from blowing off during operation. Be sure to use the right crimp specs when crimping the end form to the hose. Over crimping can crush the hydraulic hose, blocking the fluid and weakening the hose.

Q: How does a hydraulic crimping machine work?

A: A hydraulic crimper works by using pressurised liquid to drive a piston down into a cylinder where it compresses a die against a cable, wire or hose being worked on. As this happens, the die forms a permanent bend at its point of contact.

Q: How do you maintain a crimping tool?

A: Upon completion of works, wipe the tool to remove stains and foreign materials with a piece of soft cloth and close the handle to avoid any foreign material from entering the crimper and the anvil. Then, store the tool in a dry place.

Q: Which tool used for crimping hydraulic hose?

A: To join the ends of two cables, wires, or other similarly flexible materials, such hydraulic hoses, to a matching hose end, one uses a hydraulic crimper. By transferring force from the user to the tool via a hydraulic fluid system, this tool enables the user to make crimped connections.

Q: What is the biggest safety risk in a hydraulic system?

A: One of the most severe hazards associated with hydraulic system is injection injury. This occurs when a person is struck by a high-pressure stream of hydraulic fluid, injecting it into their body. This happens most often on people's hands and fingers when checking for leaks in a system.

Q: Can you reuse hydraulic crimp fittings?

A: If the fitting is found to be in good condition and has been handled correctly, it can be reused safely.

Q: Can hydraulic lines get air locked?

A: Trapped air in hydraulic systems can adversely impact performance because air is compressible and hydraulic fluid is not. This means that the density and volume of hydraulic fluid remain the same with changes in pressure.

Q: How tight do you tighten hydraulic fittings?

A: Once aligned, tighten the nut until it is "firm" against the washer and o-ring, with the nut becoming snug with a feel of metal-on-metal in less than one revolution. Over-tightening causes as many leaks as under-tightening.

Q: How are hydraulic hoses crimped?

A: Hydraulic hose crimping is a method of joining hydraulic hoses and fittings by compressing them together using a crimping machine. The machine applies a specific amount of force to deform the fitting and hose, creating a tight and secure connection.

Q: How do you crimp a hydraulic hose fitting?

A: Step 1: Measure and cut the hose.
Step 2: Mark insertion depth.
Step 3: Clean the hose.
Step 4: Load in the correct specifications.
Step 5: Select the die.
Step 6: Place the hose in the crimping machine.
Step 7: Crimp the hose.
Step 8: Verify the crimp diameter.

Q: Do crimp tools need to be calibrated?

A: The industrial crimp tool requires calibration to confirm performance in relation to specifications and to identify needed repairs or adjustments. Calibrating a crimp tool can also involve the electrical and mechanical testing (pull test) of a crimped joint.

Q: What is a hydraulic crimping machine?

A: A hydraulic crimping hose machine is primarily used for connecting to the end of a variety of hose sizes and fabricating hose assemblies. The hose is connected by crimping one or both ends to ensure that the two portions are held together.

Q: How do hydraulic mechanisms work?

A: In order to generate fluid power, hydraulic systems require a pump to force hydraulic fluid through the system. After going through the valves, the fluid enters the cylinder, where it transforms from hydraulic energy into mechanical energy. The valves assist in controlling the liquid's flow and releasing pressure when necessary.

Q: What is a hose crimping machine used for?

A: The crimping machine facilitates the process of crimping the fittings on the ends of the hoses, allowing the hose assembly to be connected to the appropriate flow system. Crimping machines are handheld, battery-operated, lightweight, and portable tools used to crimp or fasten metal fittings to stiff hose ends.
